Listening Can Save Lives

By Sol Solomon

Ken Hopper used to work as a patrol officer for the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge and intervened in an estimated 200 suicide attempts, saving their lives. His main technique was simple: to listen. He engaged individuals in conversation to actively listen to their concerns and problems. He was known for his empathetic and non-judgmental approach, which allowed him to build rapport with people and help them feel heard and understood.

Listening is truly powerful. We can provide a safe place for someone to share. It might just save their life. Most of the time they don't want our advice. They just need an ear.

"What would you do if your family member, friend, or loved one was suicidal? What would you say? Would you know what to say? In my experience, it's not just the talking that you do, but the listening. Listen to understand. Don't argue, blame, or tell the person you know how they feel, because you probably don't. By just being there, you may just be the turning point that they need."
